John died May 20, 1995, and the following year the John Vossen Memorial Award was established to recognize and encourage the development of high school science experiments in the areas of interest to the AVS. When Peter Mark was unable to continue as Editor JVST because of declining health, John took over the task without fanfare and maintained continuity until a new editor could be found.
