Michigan Chapter 

The North Central Chapter was approved in 1973 with the primary geographical area including all of Michigan. It was part of the Great Lakes RAG, which covered Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. It became the Michigan Chapter in 1989. 

Current activities of the Chapter are available on the Web page which is accessed through the AVS Web site. The Web page also contains a list of past events since 1990. The chapter sponsors from 2-6 dinner meetings per year, and a one-day Spring Symposium and vacuum equipment exhibition. In addition, the Michigan AVS sponsors a Michigan high school science teacher to attend the Science Educators' Workshop held each year at the AVS National Symposium.

May 21: First Symposium in Detroit with invited papers only  

1975

May 6-7: Second Great Lakes Regional Symposium, Northland Inn, Detroit. Special session on “Application of thin films for energy conversion”. A 1-day course “Fundamentals of Evaporation Methods,” with a fee  of $50. 

1978

May 16:  5th Symposium on  Vacuum Technology  and Surface Science; Southfield, MI.  There was a vacuum equipment display  and a  1-day course on “Microcircuit Thin Film Technology” was taught by John Skok; registration fee $40., short course “Micro-circuit thin film technology” 

1979

May 22: 6th Symposium on  Vacuum Technology and Surface Science  with “Surfaces and Interfaces” on  May 23 , Southfield, MI. There was a vacuum equipment display  and a 1-day course on “Properties of Vacuum  System Materials” taught by Bill Brunner.

 1980

May 8: 7th Annual Symposium. Northland Inn, Southfield. MI. Topics were “Advances in New Energy Sources” & “Advanced semiconductor processing”. The symposium registration fee was $25 for members, $30 for non-members and $5 for students. 

1981

May 19: 8th Annual Symposium. “Surfaces & Interfaces”, Bloomfield, MI. There was a vacuum equipment display  and a 1-day course on “Adhesion’ taught by Kash Mittal.

May 17: 10th Annual Symposium “Prospective Hydrogen Energy Cycles”; Botsford Inn, Southfield, MI. There was a vacuum equipment display and a 1-day course on “CVD for Electronics” taught by Werner Kern.

May 30: 12th Annual Symposium, Airport Hilton, Detroit; “Microelectronics technology”, The course program included  3 courses “Thin Film processes”, “Vacuum Technology” and “Pumping Hazardous gases”.

1989

May 3: Michigan Chapter 16th Annual Symposium “Plasma Processing of Materials”, Greater Detroit area,. There was a vacuum equipment display and 2 courses: ”Mechanical Properties of Thin Films” (Dick Hoffman), and “PECVD” ( Frank Jansen)
