J. Peter Hobson was a key actor in the formation of the Surface Science Division in 1968. This required a careful balancing act since many influential people in the surface science community had a strong preference for association with other groups, such as the American Physical Society. Peter had great support from many scientists, and especially from Charlie Duke. He received the Gaede-Langmuir Award in 1990.
