Graduate Research Awards

The AVS  Student  Prizes were established in 1984. They are awarded to recognize and encourage excellence in graduate studies in the sciences and technologies of interest to the AVS. In 1994, they were renamed Graduate  Research Awards. The value of the Prizes and Awards was $500. The Award currently consists of a $1000 award, a certificate, and reimbursed travel support to attend the International Symposium.

The Student Prizes replaced the Scholarships which were awarded  during 1967- 1983. These Scholarships are listed separately under Scholarships.

 

Russell and Sigurd Varian Fellowship

The Russell and Sigurd Varian Fellowship was established in 1982 to commemorate the pioneering work of Russell and Sigurd Varian in the field of vacuum science and technology. It is presented to recognize and encourage excellence in graduate studies in vacuum science; the winner was selected from three finalists after they made presentations to the Awards and Scholarships Committee during the Symposium. The candidates had to have one year remaining before graduation. The Fellowship is supported by Varian Associates. The first Varian Fellowship was presented in 1983 when the other student winners received Scholarships. The 1983 Varian Scholar is listed here for completeness. The Fellowship currently consists of a $1500 award, a certificate, and reimbursed travel support to attend the International Symposium.

 

Nellie Yeoh Whetten Award

The Nellie Yeoh Whetten Award was established in 1989, in the spirit of Nellie Yeoh Whetten, to recognize and encourage excellence by women in graduate studies in the sciences and technologies of interest to the AVS. A fund  to support the award was established by Timothy J. Whetten, friends and family of Nellie Yeoh Whetten, and the AVS. The Award currently consists of a $1500 award, a certificate, and reimbursed travel support to attend the International Symposium.

 

Dorothy M. and Earl S. Hoffman Award

The Award was established in 2003 to commemorate the contributions of Dorothy M Hoffman  to the AVS and especially her interest in education. The Award currently consists of a $1500 award, a certificate, and reimbursed travel support to attend the International Symposium.

 

Dorothy M. and Earl S. Hoffman Scholarships

These two scholarships were established in 2002 to commemorate the contributions of Dorothy M Hoffman to the AVS and especially her interest in education. The Award currently consists of a $1000 award, a certificate, and reimbursed travel support to attend the International Symposium.
