Charles B. Duke - BoD 1973-1976. President 1979. Honorary Member 1982. Fellow 1994. Welch Award 1977. Co-founder (with Spicer) of Electronic Materials and Processing Division. Duke played a major role in AVS becoming a full member of AIP. He was also responsible for the establishment of the first International Conference on Solid Surfaces, which ran parallel to the Fifth International Vacuum Congress of the IUVSTA, in Boston, 1971. By obtaining the sponsorship of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics for this conference he conferred immediate international status, and the conference has continued with great success.
