Biomaterial Interfaces Division Plenary Session
Sunday, November 12, 2006, 3:00-5:00 p.m., Room 2014, Moscone West, followed
by a reception
The Biomaterials
Interfaces Division opens the 53rd AVS International Symposium and
Exhibition with its traditional Sunday afternoon plenary session and
reception. This kick-off event provides an open venue for cross-topic and
inter-disciplinary exchange, where new, inspiring and emerging ideas in
biomaterials surface science and biotechnology important to the broader AVS
audience might be presented and discussed. The Plenary event is open to all,
promoting interactions necessary to move fields forward through “out of the
box” thinking. This year’s three plenary lectures will focus on applications
of nanotechnology in biological systems. Politics and science have become
intimately related in this arena recently, providing an interesting and
fertile ground for debate and scientific exploration. Prof. V. Colvin (Rice
University) will open the plenary session, discussing the emerging field of
nanotoxicology, and how nanosystems have prompted both unique health and
environmental concerns. Dr. M. Natan (Oxonica, Inc.) will follow, describing
innovations in nano-tag labeling methods for highly resolved bio-detection,
identification, diagnostics, and rapid screening capabilities in complex
biological systems. The final plenary presentation from H. Craighead
(Cornell University) will detail breakthrough nanofabrication innovations in
novel microfluidic processing systems. These featured talks reflect the
increasing impact of sophisticated materials architectures, capabilities and
opportunities in scientific but also in consumer-based and more worldly
terms. As in the past, BID seeks to attract a broad plenary event audience
with these presentations focused at the interface of complex nano-scale
materials in human, biological and analytical systems.
