SYMPOSIUM G
Applications, Manufacturing, and Equipment

Symposium Chairs

Hana Baránková, Uppsala University, Sweden, Hana.Barankova@Angstrom.uu.se
Papken Hovsepian
, Sheffield Hallam University, UK, p.hovsepian@shu.ac.ukK

This symposium will focus on the industrial manufacturing and application aspects of various coating, thin film and surface engineering technologies. These include coatings for automotive and aerospace applications, for machining advanced materials, hollow-cathode and atmospheric plasma coatings and large area coatings. Also of particular interest are surface treatments before and after coating to enhance the performance of engineered surfaces, hybrid coating techniques, innovations in manufacturing practices and advances in industrial PVD&CVD deposition equipment.

G1. Innovations in Surface Coatings and Treatments

Session Chairs

Ronghua Wei, Southwest Research Institute, rwei@swri.org
Markus Rodmar
, Sandvik Tooling, Sweden, markus.rodmar@sandvik.com

Papers concerning novel deposition processes, novel coatings, surface treatments and technologies are solicited. Emphasis is put on recent developments in hard, superhard nitrides, carbides, carbonitrides, borides, oxides, nano structured composites and multi-phased coatings using innovative methods for deposition and for practical applications.

Invited Speakers

Heidrun Klostermann, FEP, Fraunhofer Institute, Germany, “Requirements for Coating Equipment from an Industrial Viewpoint”

G2. Coatings for  Automotive and Aerospace Applications

Session Chairs

Raphael Mertens, Oerlikon Balzers Coating, Raphael.Mertens@oerlikon.com
Gayatri Dadheech,
General Motors, gayatri.dadheech@gm.com

Metallurgical coatings for automotive and aerospace applications are a rapidly expanding field. This seminar will gather most of the top players in the field. It solicits contributions from automotive engineers involved in the introduction of coatings, coating solution and technology providers and scientists from research institutions and universities active in the field. Scientific and technical papers on PVD, CVD and thermal spraying addressing coating development, coating characterization and coating tribology and application are encouraged.

Invited Speakers

Ali Erdemir, Argonne National Laboratories, Argonne, IL, USA, “Superhard and Low-friction Coatings by Design: Synthesis and Applications in Automotive Field

Christian Buske, Plasmatreat GmbH, Steinhagen, Germany “Advances in Open Air Plasma Technologies and Automotive Applications

G3. Atmospheric Plasma, Hollow Cathode Discharge, and Hybrid Technologies

Session Chairs

Vladimir H. Baggio-Scheid, General-Command of Aerospace Technology, Brazil, scheid@ieav.cta.br
Adrian Leyland, University of Sheffield, UK, a.leyland@sheffield.ac.uk

Papers are solicited that deal with fundamental aspects of (and the latest technological developments in) atmospheric plasma, hollow cathode discharge and hybrid plasma processing.  Topics covered include – but are not limited to – equipment design, coating deposition, thermal/thermochemical treatment, surface functional modification, surface characterization, discharge characterization/modeling and process diagnostics. Papers addressing issues of industrial processing and applications for the abovementioned technologies are also welcomed.

Invited speakers:

Hideyuki Kodama, Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology, Japan, "Synthesis of Amorphous Carbon Films using Large-scale Atmospheric Pressure Plasma CVD Equipment".

J. Alan Rees, Hiden Analytical Ltd, Warrington, UK, "Mass and Energy Spectrometry of Atmospheric Plasmas"

E4/G4. Coatings for machining advanced materials and advanced manufacturing methods

Session Chairs

Wolfgang Kalss, Oerlikon Balzers Coatings, Liechtenstein, wolfgang.kalss@oerlikon.com
Hans G. Fuss
, CemeCon, Germany, HG.Fuss@CemeCon.de

This session should focus on recent developments in coatings, deposited by PVD, CVD and hybrid coating technology, to fulfill the demands in the manufacturing industry, i.e. machining of CFRP/Ti, CFRP/Al, titanium and nickel based alloys, dry machining, machining austempered ductile iron (ADI) or CGI, hot forging, forming of hardened steels and lightweight materials, die casting, and plastic injection molding. Current coatings must be tuned to operate effectively under extreme conditions like high temperature, high pressure, intense chemical or mechanical wear, and a combination of those. Contributions should emphasize tribological and wear aspects of hard, superhard, nanocomposite and lubricious coatings with respect to their mechanical and physical properties.

Invited Speaker

German Fox-Rabinovich, McMaster University, UK, “Adaptive PVD Coatings for Machining of Hard to Cut Materials"
