gric The Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) is an alliance of two tribes: the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and the Pee Posh (Maricopa). The Community was established by executive order in 1859 and formally established its own constitution in 1939. The Gila River Indian Community is the largest indigenous population in the Phoenix metropolitan area; the community covers over 600 square miles and borders many of the valley’s cities. The Tribal Seal symbolizes the Gila River bringing life to the desert. The irrigation systems are representative of those developed by the ancient Hu Hu Kam. From the blue skies overhead, to the majestic mountain backdrop the seal represents the history of the Akimel O’odham, the people of the river.
